Les évolutions historiques et culturelles du XIX e siècle, telles que le développement de l’Empire britannique et les romans de Sir Walter Scott, amplifièrent l’engouement pour les récits d’aventures. Le capitaine Marryat, en particulier, fut l’un des inventeurs du roman d’aventures pour la jeunesse, tout en se maintenant dans la filiation de Defoe. À partir de la seconde moitié du siècle, de nouvelles évolutions se manifestèrent : la dimension didactique du roman d’aventures s’estompa et les récits – écrits essentiellement pour les garçons – firent une part plus belle au divertissement.This article begins by discussing the success of Defoe’s novel Robinson Crusoe, which was so popular after publication in 1719 that numerous editions followed including stories derived from Defoe’s work which were called Robinsonnades. But in the nineteenth century historical and cultural developments, such as the expansion of the British Empire and the novels of Sir Walter Scott, accelerated the love of adventure stories. Captain Marryat, in particular, developed adventure stories for children, though the influence of Defoe remained clear. From the middle of the nineteenth century further changes occurred, when the didactic element in adventure stories began to diminish, and tales were published to emphasize enjoyment, written primarily for boys.Cairn free access
