The cosmopolitan writer Lafcadio Hearn’s works in English on the French West Indies, published in translation by the Mercure de France during the 1930s, are plagiarized in Je suis Martiniquaise. His sympathetic view of Martinican country folk around 1880, which he had couched in a sociocultural perspective, is systematically betrayed in Je suis Martiniquaise in favor of a colonialist exoticism with highly erotic overtones at the precise moment when Martinique ceased to be a colony to become an overseas département of France.Cairn free access
