It shows that, with his system, Hegel integrates two different and seemingly contradicting claims. One the one hand, Hegel holds that the different arts have their own capacities and achievements, which cannot be reduced to one another. On the other hand, he argues that theses capacities and achievements can only be understood within an overarching conception of art as a whole. Far from totalizing art with his system, Hegel thus combines a conception of different arts as autonomous practices with the idea that different arts (as realizations of what art is) develop contributions within historical-cultural contexts in which individuals and groups interact with them. On Hegel’s view, different arts stand in dynamic exchanges with one another and do so on the basis of their common aim, namely, to provide productive impulses for the self-movement of historical-cultural practices. Hegel’s thoughts on art thus offer insight into the heterogeneous unity of the arts. Cairn restricted access
