The contrasting contributions of holacracy to deliberative democracy in business. An ethnographic study in a French SME

Since the 1950s, the development of self-organization theories has renewed the way of thinking organizations and democracy, among both researchers and practitioners. Within this framework, holacracy can be analyzed as a deliberative system. Based on an ethnography of an industrial SME that had adopted holacracy, this article shows the contrasting effects of the model in the dynamics of democratization of a company. Indeed, while holacracy undoubtedly initiates an exercise of apparent consensus deliberation (Urfalino, 2007), the model leads to contradictory practices regarding participation in decisions for a proportion of the organization’s members. This study invites a rethinking of the notion of self-organization in the context of the firm, the place to be given to the informal spaces of discussions, and the role of the company leaders in the democratization of firms.
