This article examines the influence of the type of public organization (for-profit or nonprofit public sector) on managers’ stress, and the role of emotion-focused self-accusation coping strategies in the relationship between role conflict and managers’ stress. Two theoretical frameworks are used: the approach based on management methods (Chanlat, 1999) and the transactional stress model (Lazarus and Folkman, 1984). The results of this study, conducted on a sample of 404 public sector managers, demonstrate the role of the type of public organization in the perception of stress. Our research also shows the crucial role of self-accusation in the relationship between role conflict and managers’ stress in non-profit public organizations, especially where middle managers are concerned. However, these results were not observed in for-profit public organizations. Finally, the implications of this study are oriented towards a management of stress and emotion-focused self-accusation.Cairn free access |
