It first explains the function of the proposition in the treatise, then shows how it is linked to several texts about pneumatics written by Leibniz during his first years in Paris (1672-73). These texts are part of the history of the experiments on vacuum performed by Robert Boyle and Christiaan Huygens, a key period to grasp the birth of experimental physics. They reveal the thought of a young Leibniz eager to assimilate modern methods, yet already deeply original. What is at stake for him is to test the explanatory power of his Hypothesis physica nova.Cairn free access
