Henri Devaux (1862-1956) was a French botanist who held a research chair in plant physiology at the Faculty of science in Bordeaux from 1906 to 1932. Corresponding member (1933) then non-resident member (1946) of the Académie des sciences, Devaux imposed himself in the early 20th century as one of France’s specialists in the physics of surfaces and thin films. Looking at his life we see that Devaux was also a fervent evangelical Christian, very active in this community. Here we aim to understand how Devaux articulated the dialogue between science and religion in his work. Defender of the concept of complementarity, Devaux regularly combined scientific research with theological reflection in his laboratory notebooks, a practice which he sometimes extended to his scientific papers. In a final section, we will characterize Devaux’s creationism, which appears to be based on a real knowledge of contemporary science.Cairn free access
