During this time, the effects of the internment policy, evangelization, and mandatory schooling resulted in the disruption of the Romani family unit. Pregnant women and mothers in particular faced specific episodes of physical, sexual, and symbolic violence, including separation from children and dispossession of bodily autonomy. Incorporating evidence from witness statements, administrative correspondence, and diaries, this study demonstrates that camp authorities designed specific control measures for pregnant women and mothers. It argues that schooling and religious policies further attempted to attack and remodel the Romani family unit by changing what it meant to be a Romani woman, mother, and daughter. But power dynamics in camps were not unilateral, as is evident in the resistance strategies developed by pregnant women and mothers to reclaim their agency. Cairn restricted access
