They also show that the Shoah took place in full view, both in the streets and in households. Before the war, Jewish fellow citizens, provided they were Luxembourgers, were able to become respected citizens and contribute to socio-political life. Foreign Jewish migrants first had to earn their right of residence in the country. Their eagerness to work enabled them to integrate into society and, if necessary, to make careers for themselves. After the German invasion of Luxembourg, Jewish citizens lived in constant insecurity and fear of repression by the Nazi occupiers or their pro-German supporters. Only a few dared to help the persecuted. Letters and eyewitness accounts preserve the emotions experienced and supplement the administrative files of the perpetrators. This makes the suffering of a section of local society more tangible. The victims of the Shoah are given a face again through microhistory. Cairn restricted access
