In the encyclical, Pius XI cautioned the faithful about the Reich’s Concordat violations and deemed Nazism irreconcilable with Christian belief. Drafted by Secretary of State Pacelli and German bishops, this papal speech blended longstanding anti-modernism with burgeoning anti-totalitarianism. The encyclical sought to back German Catholic defiance while ignoring antisemitism. Prior Vatican archives from the 1930s allowed nuancing perspectives on the text, its origins, production context, and initial reception. Newly available Pius XII archives have supplemented these insights with additional files. This article takes a fresh look at the meaning and scope of this encyclical. It delineates the shift from 1933 appeasement to the 1937 protest and then Pius XII’s silence. It examines the document’s dimension of spiritual resistance but also points out its limitations. Contemporaneous witnesses’ recollections and the encyclical’s impacts on Third Reich policies are also scrutinized. Specifically, the Pius XII archives enable us to examine the encyclical’s legacy, postwar significance, and varied applications. This prompts reflection on the Church’s internal memory-shaping once the war concluded.Cairn restricted access
