This, the only massacre of Gypsies so far recorded in France during World War II, has not been the subject research until now. This article presents the facts in the context of the French state’s discriminatory policy towards nomads during the war, which was considerably aggravated by their internment and house arrest. The massacre is interpreted as a form of extension into France of the German genocidal violence against the Roma, Sinti, and Travellers in Europe. The dearth of shared memories of this event underlines the lack of interest in the fate of communities with atypical lifestyles.Cairn restricted access
