Zusammenfassung:On June 23, 1944, as part of an operation targeting French Resistance fighters and communists in the town of Dunes in the county of Tarn-et-Garonne, a unit of soldiers from the SS Division “Das Reich” stationed in Valence-d’Agen executed 14 people from three families of fairground workers, including six women and six children, in the neighboring village of Saint-Sixte in Lot-et-Garonne. This, the only massacre of Gypsies so far recorded in France during World War II, has not been the subject research until now. This article presents the facts in the context of the French state’s discriminatory policy towards nomads during the war, which was considerably aggravated by their internment and house arrest. The massacre is interpreted as a form of extension into France of the German genocidal violence against the Roma, Sinti, and Travellers in Europe. The dearth of shared memories of this event underlines the lack of interest in the fate of communities with atypical lifestyles.
