Riassunto:Based on the “nomads” register of the Altkirch district established in the aftermath of World War I, this article documents the individual and family trajectories of the Sundgau Manouches between 1939 and 1945. Identified as “nomads” or “Gypsies,” the Manouches of Alsace were the target of multiple racial persecutions implemented by both the French authorities and the German police forces: expulsions, forced detentions, house arrests, internments, transfers, and deportations. By focusing on this Alsatian border area, this article aims to describe the repressive police tactics deployed against families exercising itinerant trades in the Sundgau area before the war, through the reconstruction of different biographical paths. Making use of French and German sources as well as several survivors’ testimonies, this article explores the forced dislocation of the Sundgau Manouches by placing it in the context of the German genocidal policy carried out against the Zigeuner on a European level.
