This meant one factor in the perpetration of the crime was sidestepped: the collaboration of German society. The claim made by most Germans after the war that they had been unaware of the genocide was accepted by German historians for a long time.Since the 1970s, individual papers have slowly started to lift the taboo concerning this topic. Yet it was only in the years 2006 and 2007 that three monographies by German historians, following up on a monography by David Bankier on this subject, reached a new level of scholarship in their research. This was achieved by their analysis and incorporation of hitherto ignored sources into their body of research.The validity of these sources becomes evident in that the authors have arrived independently of each other, by using different sources and employing different approaches, at a basically congruent result : The claim uttered by most Germans after the war that they had not known of the murder of the Jews during the time of National Socialism has been refuted as an attempt to justify their own behaviour.Cairn free access
