Their self-created mythology of having been the military elite and European battle formation against Bolshevism lingers on to the present day. In fact, several hundred thousand volunteers of non-German origin fought in the Waffen-SS, including approximately 8,000 French people in the 33rd SS Division “Charlemagne”. While they are remembered for being responsible for many massacres of the civilian population in numerous European countries, Waffen-SS units were also involved in the murder of European Jews in a variety of ways.This article explains to what extent Waffen-SS soldiers were involved in mass executions of Jews in Eastern Europe, in deportations to the Nazi extermination camps or crimes in the concentration camps.Cairn free access |
