الملخص:In addition to the army, air force and navy, the Waffen-SS was officially the fourth part of the Nazi Wehrmacht. Until the end of the Second World War, approximately 900,000 men as well as several thousands of women, who worked as SS assistants, served this organisation, which was continually expanded by Heinrich Himmler. Their self-created mythology of having been the military elite and European battle formation against Bolshevism lingers on to the present day. In fact, several hundred thousand volunteers of non-German origin fought in the Waffen-SS, including approximately 8,000 French people in the 33rd SS Division “Charlemagne”. While they are remembered for being responsible for many massacres of the civilian population in numerous European countries, Waffen-SS units were also involved in the murder of European Jews in a variety of ways. This article explains to what extent Waffen-SS soldiers were involved in mass executions of Jews in Eastern Europe, in deportations to the Nazi extermination camps or crimes in the concentration camps.
