First, the history of the camps will be presented with a periodisation in the “construction phase” (as of autumn 1941), the “consolidation and optimisation phase” (July until the end of 1942) and the “expansion phase” (1943). A second part is devoted to the organisation of the mass murder and highlights the characteristics of the perpetrator network, which consisted of approximately 120 men and had previously been deployed for the “euthanasia” programme (“Operation T4”). The article also covers the cooperation with other players, such as the Trawniki men, who served as guards. The last part begins with a collective biography of the perpetrators, followed by a description of the possible motives for participating in the mass murder and a typology of the behaviour based on the criteria of violence and willingness.Cairn free access
