Zusammenfassung:The persecution of the Jews after 1933 was not only a political process executed by the institution of the Nazi state. It was also a social process in which the German people were involved in a variety of ways. Only with the cooperation between the Nazi dictatorship and German society did the persecution of the Jews after 1933 take on its specific dynamic. This paper thoroughly investigates why so many Germans were moved to participate in the persecution of the Jews. The extent of the social anti-Semitism, the assimilation of the Germans to Nazi norms and behavioural expectations, the exploitation of the persecution of the Jews for personal gain and, finally, the growing popularity of the Nazi regime and Hitler played an important role. Lastly, this paper examines the reaction of the Germans to the Holocaust and mass murder.
