We note several substantial similarities between Wagner’s autobiography, entitled My Life, and Hitler’s Mein Kampf, particularly in the two writers’ accounts of their childhood. It is also worth studying Wagner’s 1850 pamphlet, Judaism in Music, in which the composer lashes out at the Jewish musicians of his era, namely Mendelssohn and Meyerbeer, turning them into scapegoats or even wandering Jews. The foul virulence of these attacks can be systematically found in Hitler’s book. Although the form it takes is different, the ideas are very similar. While Wagner was Hitler’s main source of inspiration for Mein Kampf, two other authors also inspired him to a lesser degree. One of them, French author Joseph Arthur de Gobineau, was a contemporary and friend of Wagner’s. The other was Wagner’s son-in-law, the British-born German ideologue Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Throughout the article, it is clearly shown that Wagner was on Hitler’s mind and that he is reflected in Hitler’s ideological development.Cairn free access
