The event of Auschwitz put an end to dialectical thinking in all its forms. It has also forced us to rethink the way that culture must progress, given the acuteness of the harm caused, and has compelled us to think about a new way of connecting the historical and the philosophical. The answer to the question, “Why Auschwitz?” must be further developed through the exploration of possible answers to the question, “Why the Jews?” since they were the focus of the exterminatory persecution. Lyotard attempted to respond by isolating the distinctive trait of the hatred of the law, a law that is open to interpretation and exposes itself to history. Its paradigm characterizes the Jewish being, herein called “the Jews.” This highlighting of decisive determinations is truly illuminating. Yet it is accompanied by radical constructions that limit its reach, even as the moderation of this radicalness confirms the analysis by further expanding upon and honing it.Cairn free access
