Historians have often highlighted the French authorities’ lack of will, which was fed by anti-Semitism. According to certain historians, the hostility of the native Muslims toward the Jews was exaggerated and manipulated in order to keep the latter group in a subordinate position. In light of certain administrative documents of the French administration in Algeria, this paper suggests that we reconsider the role that the tensions between these communities played vis-à-vis the attitude of the authorities.Cairn free access
