Born of a Jewish mother, there was no chance that the two sisters would survive in a place designed for mass murder. However, their striking physical resemblance confused the SS doctor who was supervising the selections the day that their convoy arrived. Mistaken for twins, Andra and Tatiana were thus selected along with their young 4-year-old cousin Sergio De Simone to serve as child guinea pigs in Dr. Mengele’s medical experiments. While the two sisters survived without enduring either physical violence or food deprivation – a unique and unusual case in the history of the children killed in the Holocaust – Sergio met a more tragic fate. In November 1944, the young Italian boy and 19 other Jewish children were selected and then transferred to the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg. There, the SS doctor Kurt Heissmeyer inoculated Sergio with the tuberculosis bacilli. On the night of April 20, 1945, with the English troops at the city gates, the 20 children were killed at the Bullenhuser Damm school, which had been used as an off-site extension of the camp. This crime remained unpunished and forgotten until the early 1980s. Andra and Tatiana were the youngest Italian children to survive the Holocaust.Cairn free access |
