Ilse Aichinger’s work feeds this debate. Many of her poems begin with a call for the fall from grace. However, her poetry quickly shifts focus to an inability to speak and the fear of never again opening “my mouth because of the threat and the impression that the end has come.” Aichinger demonstrates that it is possible to create poetry that is born of and fed by this man-made catastrophe.Cairn free access |
