It deals with the relationship between the post-war generation and that of their parents, who were involved with the Nazi regime. This frequently ambivalent exchange is the subject of the novel. Critics of The Reader accused Schlink of telling the story in a historically inappropriate way and creating a problematic depiction of the inter-generational relationship.
