This article presents literary analysis and creative writing assignments completed by 12th grade students at the Buc French-German high school. In particular, the diary entries that the students wrote as part of their creative writing work demonstrate their understanding and interpretation of different excerpts from the book.The teachers also asked the students to analyze and comment on the book as a whole. Students’ work on The Reader forces them to confront Germany’s past, pushing them to develop their own perception of it and explore the notion of guilt that comes along with it.Cairn free access
