This article analyzes the actual differences between the script written in 1942 and the film as shown in 1945. In this very modified later version (1944), one of the characters seems to be a camouflaged Jew. In addition to the unforgettable love story and the superb representation of the theater world of the 19th century, one can also read a portrayal of France in 1942 with its heroes and its traitors who are destined to be killed by the film’s conclusion. In actuality, perhaps too much attention has been given to the “clandestine collaboration” between these two famous Jewish artists, an importance which tended to overshadow the significance of an artistic work which in its original form could have been interpreted quite differently.Cairn free access
