Recording actual events, it is the only document that was both published “in real time” and recorded for that express purpose. Also, as a result of his direct memory, the work enjoys a credibility factor. Unlike testimonies told from a distance of time, Wiernik does not “reorganize” a posteriori the facts that he relates. This text is also written by a “committed” observer. Jankiel Wiernik is a hardened man because of his harsh personal past. He tells a story of the only Jew from Treblinka’s “death sector” that, being a professional carpenter, managed to be sent to all parts of the camp for different “work assignments”. This article shows how these elements strongly mark both the style and contents of the story. In order to restate the work within the context in which it was written, we will attempt to recall the historical background related to the creation of the Treblinka death camp coupled with a short presentation of the author’s manuscript which includes the work’s background, time frame and venue. While examining the text, we will emphasize both its uniqueness as well as the problems it raises. In the end result we would like to propose a renewed balance that examines the approach of certain historians as they view the status of the witness in written history.Cairn free access |
