The camp functioned both as a forced labor camp, a manpower reservoir, a looting center and a death camp. During the summer of 1942, gas chambers were built in one of the barracks. They were in use until September 1943. Despite of all the information that we have in hand, it is impossible to give a precise number of the victims assassinated in Majdanek.Cairn free access
