Filmmaker Stanley Kramer was part of the liberal tradition of American cinema to make this film a civics lesson for the public, but that was hardly popular in West Germany at the start. This film was inspired by the trials of Nuremberg No. 3, organized by the U.S. military justice against judges and German lawyers who had contributed to the implementation of Nazi laws and given legal cover for crime initiatives of the Nazis. The three hour long film was relatively placed, but it was significant at the time in American cinema for the general public, anti-Semitism, and the extermination of Jews during the war. Finally, and in the context of the Cold War, Kramer’s film was part of a desire to develop for western audiences a common moral framework around the idea of defending “universal” justice.Cairn free access
