In this bloated period, however, movies and documents dealing with Nazi Germany and its crimes were relatively few. His early project, was to create a portrait of contemporary Germany. It was by digging in Germany, however, that the recent past has emerged and, gradually, the director was compelled to return to this past. Thus Fassbinder conjured the following films and plays about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust: Nur eine Scheibe Brot (1965), Der Mull, die Stadt und der Tod (1976), Deutschland im Herbst (Germany in Autumn) (1978), In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden (In a Year with Thirteen Moons) (1978), Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss ( Veronika Voss) (1979), Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980), Lili Marlene (1981). Der Mull, die Stadt und der Tod was the cause of the greatest cultural controversy on the subject of post-war Germany. Its purpose was based on the presence of a character called the «rich Jew». The controversy erupted twice: once in 1976 and again in 1985, three years after Fassbinder’s death, but it created an impasse on the reading and the thorough understanding of the work itself. So this is to look back on the work of Fassbinder to understand what has held up the memory of the Holocaust.Cairn free access
