Then, more than 30,000 of them were deported to Transnistria in several waves. Thanks to the intervention of Traian Popovici, the Mayor of the city (recognized as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem), 20,000 Jews could escape deportation and remain in Cernauti.Cairn free access
