An increasing number of Jews would be employed to perform tasks that became more and more difficult. In addition to this punishing work, they were obliged to pay high taxes. Jewish men were not allowed to serve in the army when the State, headed by Marshal Antonescu, deployed its troops on the Eastern front.As a result of the new economic system, the impoverishment of Romanian Jews was another step towards their deportation to Transnistria, while any tentative of real or alleged infringement in carrying out forced labor was penalized.Cairn free access
