Shrnutí:The Holocaust as studied in 12th grade Philosophy classesThe study of philosophy is about exploring moral issues and rational values, and anything that deviates from these realms of study is approached with extreme caution. Between 1974 and 2003 France’s national high-school philosophy curriculum included the study of such terms as “the irrational”, “death” and “violence”. Within this context it was at last possible to break the long-held silence on the Holocaust, and to include it in philosophy classes. Moreover, and still taking into account the built-in limitations of tackling racism in philosophy classes, the desire to counter anti-racist activism gave this endeavor added significance.Despite the fact that philosophy teachers may struggle with the notion of “thinking Auschwitz”, they are obliged to help their students grasp the complex issues it raises.
