Born in the Jewish faith, converted to Catholicism, arrested in the Netherlands, Stein was then deported and murdered in Auschwitz as a Jew. Through her dramatic life story one discovers the Nazi attitude towards a Jewish matter which is neither religious nor national, but rather racial i.e., based on a purely biological factor. The beatification of Edith Stein also throws light on the nature of relations between Jews and Christians after the war, including the profound and ambiguous issues involved for the Jewish world which experienced discomfort with this process of (pre-canonization).Cairn free access
