Danielou took an active interest in Judaic research at the time of Jesus, including the findings on Qumeran, and provided many good lessons. He presented himself as a man of dialogue, meeting willingly with Jews during lectures and discussions around the publication time of important works. He also acted as an expert during the Second Council of the Vatican on the difficult question of freedom of religion. This openess, however, was limited to the concept of the history of salvation which, after Christ, no longer recognized the Jewish people as the “chosen people”, did not understand Christ’s commitment to Israel, and worst of all - for reasons of faith – maintained the accusation of deicide. For a member of Christ’s church, the Holocaust brought about a necessity to conduct research and meet with Jews, but there was still a strong resistance to challenging an ancient theological tradition.Cairn free access |
