The first part of this article concentrates on the singularity of I am the clay which appears to be an allegory of the Shoah, and highlights the elaborate network of correspondences set up by Potok in this novel. The second part focuses on a portrayal of the Jewish-American community as it grapples with History and the Shoah, and lays stress on how silence is used by the narrator to render the inner experiences of his characters.
