The multi-faceted novel combining the diary and sci-fi genres clearly hints at the Holocaust without actually naming it. Auster builds up tension around the meaning of the text, sometimes making it transparent, sometimes blurring it, tension between what is invented and what is recreated. The reader can immediately feel the haunting presence of Anne Frank : The Diary of a Young Girl along the pages, yet it would be a mistake to think that In the Country of Last Things is only a case of rewriting ; there is more to it than this. It is one of the means used by Auster to obliquely putting the key moments of Jewish History to the fore and revisiting them in the ghostly light of disaster.Cairn free access
