Sumario:Testimonies on colonial violence : the international campaign against forced labor in the period between the two World WarsIn June 1925, a troublesome report arrived at the Temporary Commission on Slavery (League of Nations) detailing generalized acts of violence which were taking place in Angola and Mozambique – Portuguese territories and thus directly under European control – while this very Commission was considering how to end such practices. This damning testimony on abuse and brutality by Portuguese colonialism described how Portuguese officials and white settlers, with impunity, beat, violated or even killed Africans. According to Ross, author of the report and professor at the University of Wisconsin, the forced labor work system was in many respects worse than slavery and was mainly responsible for these acts of violence.
