The study of Germany’s history and uniqueness coupled by anti-Semitism in the 1940s and especially in the post-war years; of totalitarian regimes in the 1950s when the Cold War began; the emergence of sociology and psychology in the 1960s and the debate during that decade following the Eichmann trial and “The Deputy” concerning the role of the Church and the local populations; debates among historians regarding the Nazi leadership vis-à-vis initiatives from below during the war, that started in the 1970’s, when archives opened, and intensified in the 1980s; exposure of the looting of Jewish property when more archives opened in the 1990s, and other developments – all had a direct impact on the search for the reasons that caused the Holocaust.Cairn free access
