In the mind of the Baron Gustav von Bechtolsheim, already 52 years old and in charge of the civil administration of White Russia with the infantry Division 707, which he was in command of from September 1, 1941 until March 17, 1943, the Jews were, before all, the enemies and represented a major risk for security. In October 1941, he had 11,000 Jews executed by a police battalion which he sent himself in the smaller ghettos. His own troupes “cleaned” the villages and assassinated more than 10,500 Jews. During the winter of 1941-1942, the Division 707 lent a hand to the commandos of police and of Sicherheitsdienst to assassinate nearly 30,000 Jews in the Ghettos of Slonim, Minsk, Novogrudok and of Baranowicze. German historians consider Bechtolsheim a “unique case”. However, according to the author of this article, the security divisions and the Wehrmacht Kommandanturen established at the back of the front lines had access to similar forces and used them in their fight against the Jews.Cairn free access
