The Swiss Parliament also decided to grant the “Bergier Commission” access to private archives, in spite of the professional secrecy. Therefore, files and records belonging to companies and banks were consulted, often for the very first time, during the years 1997-2001. The final report of the Commission contains more than 11.000 pages. Spoliations are analyzed in several studies which deal with gold transactions, the banking system and financial services, the trading with dubious securities, the effects of the “Anschluss” (1938), financial relations with France, the extortion of ransom payments during the occupation of the Netherlands, the assets of Nazi victims in Swiss banks (1933-1945), as well as secret and illegal transfers and finally the legal questions. It appears that Switzerland played an important role in the international financial relations of the Third Reich. Swiss citizens were involved in the Nazi system of spoliations. Some people took advantage of the situation; some others were bystanders; others were victims and as such received limited protection from the careful Swiss authorities. The pressures of the Allies, increasingly strong at the end of the war, faded after 1946.Cairn free access
