Shrnutí:The process of “Aryanization” constituted one of the largest transformations in property ownership in contemporary German history. In the city of Hamburg more than 1 500 Jewish businessmen were gradually expelled from the economy and forced to sell or liquidate their firms. At the same time, “Aryanization” generated a growing circle of “Aryan” beneficiaries and profiteers. Taking Hamburg as an example, Frank Bajohr characterizes “Aryanization” as both a complex political and a social process. Governance and society did not exist in parallel spheres, unconnected, but rather meshed in numerous ways. Precisely the example of “Aryanization” points up how a process that was essentially ideological came to incorporate highly diverse motivations and interests, especially material.
