Riassunto:This article deals with the Viennese Jewish community administration under the Nazis and discusses its reaction to the national-socialist persecution and extermination. In Vienna Adolf Eichmann developed a new national-socialist policy against the Jews. This policy was afterwards copied in other cities of national-socialist Europe. The Jewish community came under the control of the regime. The Jewish officials were not an independent political leadership, but they were mere administrators. They had almost no freedom of action. In this situation to cooperate always seemed to be the lesser evil which offered at least the hope to save as many Jews as possible. The Viennese community under national-socialist control became the prototype of the “Judenrat”, the Jewish councils in the Ghettos. The Jewish councils’ perspective reveals, how inconceivable the national-socialist crime seemed for the victims. In this situation the Jewish administrations were nothing but authorities of powerlessness.
