The “Hutu vs. Tutsi” formula, as well as the generally accepted concept of the Tutsi being Black Africa's Jews, helped create a genocidal ideology, that appeared several decades before the tragedy of 1994. Beyond such parallelism, the author forces us to re-consider how genocidal violence makes us re-think our existing intellectual and conceptual frameworks. In particular, the group identity of the victims, i.e. as a people, a race, or a “conceptual race”? The author finally suggests we should differentiate clearly between “to know and to understand”. Kalisky argues that to understand is quite inadequate when a policy of genocide is applied. This, since it seems to justify it, and uses such inexistent justification when it only has causes.Cairn free access
