Descripció
Sumari:On September 26, 1940, Walter Benjamin committed suicide in Port-Bou, after he escaped the German occupation and the Vichy regime. He was first buried in the town's cemetery in 1945, then, after the money found on him came to an end, his body was transferred to a paupers' grave. Today, Spain honors Walter Benjamin's memory with a memorial situated in Port-Bou facing the sea. Through this specific and tragic story of Benjamin, the Jewish intellectual, Saletti, the historian, relates not only the tormented relationship that existed between Jewish intellectuals and Europe, but also the stages through which the construction of the Old Continent's memory went through.
