For several years, Yohanan Manor, an Israeli historian, has been engaged in carrying out a specialised study of the textbooks used in the Arab world. Here, he provides us with the most up-to-date analysis available concerning the latest textbooks brought out by the Palestinian Authority (since 2002), unveiling therein the sheer weight of traditional teaching, according to which the Torah and the Gospels are stages along the divine path, with the Koran and Islam constituting the true revelation, perfecting all preceding teachings. However, beyond such clichés, Y. Manor reveals a Palestinian negationism at work, intent on denying any relationship between the Jews and the Holy Land, thereby justifying European anti-Semitism (‘the Jews were persecuted because...'), shamefully truncating the actual history of Zionism and refusing to include the study of the Shoah in the curricula for Palestinian primary school pupils and high school students, thus finally erasing all trace of the Jewish presence in Eretz Yisrael over the last 3000 years. In a word, whilst the weighty, simplistic sentences and judgements tantamount to wilful bedevilment have disappeared, the derogatory tone has now become more subtle, implied. In any case, as Yohanan Manor shows, there is a long road ahead before peace of minds becomes a reality.Cairn free access
