Matteo Al Kalak, The Heresy of the Brother. A Heterodox Community in Sixteenth-Century Italy

The theme of God’s noetic reflexivity on man (and the intellectual reciprocity that subsequently develops between the two) allows us to re-examine the relationship between Christian thought and ancient philosophy, based on recent analyses by Anca Vasiliu and a corpus steeped in Platonism. For Philo, Clement, Origen and Gregory of Nyssa, God deposits his transcendent intelligible image in the human intellect in the form of reflections, i.e. in a degraded manner. To define them positively, Christians identify these reflections, which imply a certain kinship and connaturality between God and man, with the great Platonic virtues. Yet this kinship can only be beneficial if it is based on self-concern and the transformation of the established order.Cairn free access
