He then reconstructs the inner workings of the Holy Union oaths, identifying how the polemicists asserted that the pledge of loyalty to the king had lapsed, how they filled this void by inviting Catholics to swear the Union, and how this new oath helped League leaders to mobilize and control Catholics.Cet article montre comment les notions de serment et de parjure ont aidé les libellistes de la Ligue parisienne à construire un discours politico-religieux et à légitimer plusieurs initiatives des dirigeants de la Sainte-Union en matière de contrôle social. Il étudie tout d’abord comment ces auteurs ont dénoncé simultanément les fausses promesses d’Henri III et les mensonges des catholiques non-ligueurs. Il reconstruit ensuite les rouages des serments de la Sainte-Union, cernant comment les polémistes affirment que l’engagement de fidélité envers le roi est caduc, comment ils comblent ce vide en invitant les catholiques à jurer l’Union et comment ce nouveau serment a aidé les dirigeants ligueurs à mobiliser voire contrôler les catholiques.Cairn restricted access |
