Beskrivelse
Summary:This article shows how the notions of oath and perjury helped the libellists of the Parisian League construct a religio-political discourse and legitimize several social control initiatives of the Holy Union’s leaders. He first examines how these authors simultaneously denounced the false promises of Henry III and the lies of non-League Catholics. He then reconstructs the inner workings of the Holy Union oaths, identifying how the polemicists asserted that the pledge of loyalty to the king had lapsed, how they filled this void by inviting Catholics to swear the Union, and how this new oath helped League leaders to mobilize and control Catholics.
