The article explores whether the French translator Gabriel Chappuys, who translated two utopias from Italian in the later part of the sixteenth century, significantly inflected the newly established genre of utopias or whether his role was merely that of disseminator. An analysis of his translation of expressions such as mi pare ( il me semble), ma ( mais), pure ( encore, en dépit), reveals that Chappuys made subtle but significant changes to the original. The insertion of a woodcut of an ideal city (absent from the original) makes this even more apparent. The woodcut functions as both a metaphor for the complex structure of the original and a concrete image of an ideal city, giving it a cognitive as well as politico-social dimension; it thus situates the text even more explicitly in the tradition of the quattrocento ideal states than does the original. The analysis does not change Chappuys’s reputation as a prolific but somewhat careless translator, but throws new light on the relations between author and translator in that period.Cairn free access
